to create something that was not there before
DataPoiesis is the process in which data brings something into being that did not exist before. Data Poietic Objects are objects (things, furniture, appliances… ) whose essence and character depends on Data and Computation. They are not only technical artifacts, but also cultural and existential ones, as they dive deep into contemporary culture and in human perception and understanding, creating new opportunities for social imagination.
The first Datapoietic object will be a work of art, to inspire the design and business modeling process which will bring at the creation of a startup which will create Datapoietic producs and services.
Data and computation have transformed our existence. The wide and ubiquitous availability of data – in processes, objects, bodies, communication, homes, appliances, offices, schools, hospitals, environment… – have transformed not only what we can do and achieve, but also who we are. This process started with globalisation, the process of interaction and integration among people, companies, and governments worldwide. With digitally-enhanced globalisation, global constantly penetrates local, just as local constantly permeates global, in a continuous, polyphonic, ubiquitous, complex, irreducible feedback loop that transforms reality and the ways in which we are able to experience it. Data and computation (such as algorithms, AI, and all the other forms of software processing of data) are at the center of this phenomenon, and, thus, at the center of our mutation as human beings. Data is constantly extracted from our environment, processed (computed) and the results of this elaboration are used to make decisions, personalize services and interfaces, classify human beings, objects and places, and to steer the ways in which things happen. This process is not always transparent and accessible. Most of the time, in fact, it isn’t, and this fact is bringing serious negative impacts into our lives, endangering our rights, liberties and social organizations. It is imaginable to reposition data and computation in our society, transforming them from something which is a mostly extractive industry into something that positively contributes to human well-being, contributing to building meaningful relationships, enhanced empathy and solidarity, civic participation, knowledge and information production and sharing.
